3 types of basketball events
There are 3 main types of basketball recruiting events: camps, showcases and tournaments. Each basketball event has its own unique advantages. Visit the pages linked below to learn more about each type of basketball event.
- Basketball camps or clinics are designed to help you become better basketball players by focusing on individual skill development through a series of drills and game-like competitions.
- Basketball showcases help you display your talents to multiple college coaches and recruiters at once. Showcases are usually invite-only for the top high school basketball players.
- Basketball tournaments provide high-level competition in the off season to gain exposure to college coaches for potential scholarship offers. To play in these tournaments, you need to belong to a club or AAU basketball team.
how to choose which basketball events to attend and when
Your grade level and stage in the recruiting process is important to consider when choosing which basketball event to attend. Attending these events at the right time can increase your chance of getting recruited by college coaches.
Most basketball recruiting events are held in the spring and summer. April and July are the biggest months for men’s college basketball recruiting because of the NCAA evaluation period. During this time, NCAA D1 and D2 basketball coaches can watch you in person, but they can’t speak to you off campus.
There are also many basketball training camps helps during the winter months.
Check out our recommendations for when to attend basketball events based on your grade level.

8th – 9th grade
Focus: Basketball Skill Development
Events to attend: Basketball Camps and Clinics
Your focus right now is to develop varsity-level skills and become a better basketball player. Attend camps and clinics that teach strong fundamentals, build your confidence, and help you sharpen your overall game so you’re ready to compete at the next level.
10th – 11th grade
Focus: Exposure
Events to attend: Basketball Tournaments, Showcases and Camps
This is the time to start getting seen. Play in tournaments and attend showcases during NCAA evaluation periods so college coaches can watch you play live. Keep working on your skills at camps, but prioritize events that put you in front of coaches and against strong competition.
12th grade
Focus: Offers
Events to attend: Basketball Camps, Tournaments and Showcases
Now it’s about turning interest into offers and finding the best fit. Play in tournaments where coaches from your top schools will be, and attend prospect camps hosted by the programs you’re most interested in to build relationships with the coaching staff. If you’re not getting serious looks yet, reach out to schools in your target division level and invite them to watch you play in a showcase or tournament.
Insider tip: The cost of attending multiple men’s basketball events can add up. Before camp season begins, consider building a budget to help choose the number of camps, showcases and tournaments you can (or should!) realistically attend.
