Personal Statement
My name is Cooper Dodson and I have lived in Altus, OK since I was 2 years old and live in the same neighborhood as most of my extended family. As a kid growing up in Oklahoma, I played just about every sport including basketball, t-ball and football. During my 7th grade year, my dad and I went to see a Red Sox game at Fenway Park and I decided that was the sport I wanted to focus on.
Having not played any baseball since t-ball, I was behind in my abilities and not on the same skill level as the other players. However, with dedication, hard work, and private coaching I was 1 of 2 to make the high school varsity team my freshman year as a catcher. Each year I have learned additional positions and last year, I had game time at 1st base and pitcher while consistently switch hitting with success.
On March 24, 2017, my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. While she was away getting treatment, my sister and I stayed with my grandparents and while they are great, I really learned how to take care of myself. On October 10, 2017, she passed away. The guys and coaches on my baseball team have been like family to me during this time. It taught me that I always want to be a part of a team … in good times and in bad.
I would like to play baseball in college and while I am not sure about my major at this time, I am interested in sports management, physical therapy and coaching.
My passion for the game continues to drive me to be better and I know with my laser focus that I can and will make a great college student athlete.
